Information
IELTS, International English Language Testing System, is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is used as the language of communication. It covers the four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking. IELTS has two modules: General Training and Academic.
The General Training module is usually taken by people who want to immigrate, and the Academic module is taken by people who want to study abroad. It is essential that you check with the receiving country or institution to find out which module you need to take. It is your responsibility to choose the right module.

Purpose of IELTS
If you are planning to go abroad, to pursue further study, to undertake non-academic training or work experience, to immigrate or if you simply want to test your English ability, then IELTS will be the real test to check the right level of English for your needs.

Format of the Exam
Candidates are tested in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking Modules. There is a choice between Academic and General Training in the Reading and Writing Modules.
The total test time, excluding the speaking test, is two hours and 45 minutes. Your speaking test may be on the same day as the other sections, or on a different day.

Academic Training
To study or train in medium of English at an undergraduate or post graduate level.

General Training
To go to English speaking countries to complete their secondary education, to undertake work experience or Training programmes not at degree level or for Immigration purpose.

Test Scores
You are graded through Band scores on a scale of 1-9 which is recorded on a Test Report Form. This shows your overall ability as well as performance in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The test modules are designed to cover the complete range of ability from non-user to expert user.

• Listening [4 Sections, 40 Items, 30 minutes]
• Reading [3 Sections, 40 Items, 60 minutes]
• Writing [Task-1 , 150 words, 20 minutes], [Task-2 , 250 words, 40 minutes] 60 minutes.
• Speaking [10-15 minutes]

General Training

• Listening [4 Sections, 40 Items, 30 minutes]
• Reading [3 Sections, 40 Items, 60 minutes]
• Writing [Task-1 , 150 words, 20 minutes], [Task-2 , 250 words, 40 minutes] 60 minutes.
• Speaking [10-15 minutes]

Results

Band scores range from Band 1 to Band 9

Band 9 – Expert User
Band 8 – Very Good User
Band 7 – Good User
Band 6 – Competent User
Band 5 – Modest User
Band 4 – Limited User
Band 3 – Extremely Limited User
Band 2 – Intermittent User
Band 1 – Non-User

Result is declared approximately 13 days after the test date IELTS ( for paper based exams)
Results are declared in 5-6 working days for Computer based exams.
Score is valid upto 2 years

For how many days is the test conducted?
The test is conducted for 2 days. The listening, reading and writing module tests are conducted on one day and the spoken interview is taken on a day earlier or after the written test, depending on where the student has got registered.
The IDP conducts its speaking test either a day earlier than its written test, or on the next day of its written test.

When are the results declared?

The test report form is mailed directly to the candidate and to the receiving institutions within 1 week from IDP. 

What do the test results show?

The test report shows overall ability, as well as performance in listening, reading, writing and speaking. Scores are given on a band scale from 1 to 9 including a score for each module of the test in addition to an overall score. Individual module scores and overall band score may be reported in half or whole bands.

Is there any pass or fail marks? What do the bands imply?

There is no pass or fail marks.
9: expert user; has full command of the language, appropriate accurate and fluent with complete understanding.
0: non-user; essentially has no ability to use the language beyond possibly a few isolated words.

What scores are accepted?

The minimum score accepted for a course ranges from 5 to 7.5 depending upon courses and institute or the reason the candidate is applying for. Medical professionals like Nurses need 7 for Australia and 6.5 for UK and USA. Doctors need 7.

What is the passing score in IELTS?

There is no passing score in IELTS. However, universities or embassies may tell you the band score they require.
How long must a candidate wait to take the exam again?
Taking the IELTS exam has now become more convenient. Keeping the urge to go abroad in mind, the IELTS examination body has done away with its previous restriction of 3 months for taking the IELTS for a second or more time. Now one can appear for the exam without any time restrictions.
